Your Addiction Recovery
Can Be 100%

There are some obvious but many not-so-obvious steps in addiction recovery, specifically overcoming porn addiction and other sexual addictions. And, what appears to many people to be common sense approaches to addiction recovery actually are not, and by themselves are not enough.

For example, you’ve probably been told, or told yourself, things like:

  • “You just have to try harder”
  • “Just exercise more self-control”
  • “You’ve got to pray more”
  • “Read your scriptures more” … to name a few.

Is praying and reading scriptures important? I say absolutely. However, there’s something else that God requires.

I’ve worked with good, spiritual people who prayed daily for years, who read scriptures regularly, and who still struggled with addiction. I firmly believe in prayer. But apparently God requires more.

For example, the more you dwell on something, the more deeply entrenched in it you become. Ironically, the more you press yourself to overcome your addiction by trying to exercise more self-control, or by trying to have more self-discipline, the more entrenched in your addictive thoughts you become.

The answer lies in thinking and dwelling on other things.

Thinking about something over and over, combined with highly emotional experiences, establishes patterns of thought that dictate our brain chemistry. Our thoughts form habits that become addictions.

Medical science is uncovering more and more information that is helping us map exactly how this works in the brain. Experiences, just like taking certain drugs, form addictions in our brain. Howard Shaffer, who heads the Division on Addictions at Harvard, explains it this way:

"A lot of addiction is the result of experience ... repetitive, high emotion, high frequency experience. But it's become clear that neuroadaptation - that is, changes in neural circuitry that help perpetuate the behavior - occurs even in the absence of drug-taking."

New wiring in the brain

Addiction recovery begins as new wiring starts taking place in your brain. What causes the new wiring? New patterns of thought. Which lead to new actions. Which lead to new habits.

A powerful explanation on changing your thoughts and developing new habits using the Law of Displacement can be found here: How to change your thoughts.

One of the hardest steps for you to take in your addiction recovery is to believe that you can change, that you can establish new habits, that you can heal or reverse the current wiring in your brain.

My job right now is to plant in you that seed. I really want to, because it’s true. You can change. You are not a freak. You are not doomed to deal with your current addiction for the rest of your life. This isn’t about other people doing it. It’s about you doing it. You can change.

Learning what you need to know

You’re struggling with an addiction because first, you haven’t been taught yet what really works, how you rewire your brain. And second, you haven’t applied yourself to do the things that you’ll need to do. So, first comes the knowledge, second comes the application. Addiction recovery will follow.

You’ve heard that knowledge is power. More accurately, knowledge is potential power. Correct knowledge combined with correct action leads to real success.

The next thing you must realize is that people change every day. I know you believe there’s still hope for you, because you found this site. You’re looking for answers because, deep down, you think that maybe – just maybe – you can find the secret. You found it! The answers are here.

One thing that will help you believe that your addiction recovery can be complete, is to realize that there is help from others. You don’t have to figure this out on your own. You can hang your hat on the fact that many people are overcoming their addictions with the right help.

Why you can change

You can change because inside you is a person of genuine worth. With perhaps some extreme exceptions (you’re not one of them), everyone is basically good. You were born to succeed. Your life is like a heat-seeking missile.

A heat-seeking missile is launched toward a target that generates heat. The path it follows, however, is not a direct one. As it travels, it goes slightly off course and has to make corrections. Finally, after constantly making course corrections, it reaches its destination and hits the target.

Your life is like that. All of your past successes came only after course corrections along the way, however large or small. Your addiction recovery is the same. You’re looking for answers, for ways to correct your course. You’re getting closer to your target. I congratulate you on the fact that you’re here!

Truth is the heat source you’re ultimately wired for. Keep seeking for truth and you’ll find it. Truth seekers are only kept from the truth because they don’t know where to find it.

Effort required

As you move forward, addiction recovery, or the rewiring of your brain, will require some effort. It won’t be impossible, but it will sometimes be difficult. But, that’s okay, right? Nothing good was ever accomplished without effort. The promise of a brighter and happier tomorrow has always moved mankind forward marvelously!

Even though we live in a sexualized world, you can learn to respond to sexual stimulus (billboards, advertisements, movie scenes, etc.) in a normal, healthy way. Things will still arouse or stimulate you, but you can learn not to dwell on it. It doesn’t have to dominate your thinking.

With the right tools and techniques, you have the ability to make different choices than you have in the past. You can change your brain. You can establish new patterns of thought and action. People are leaving their addictions after years and years of struggling and pain. You can too!

There are many good and caring professionals who can help you in your recovery. For example, Jeffrey Schultz, a counselor in private practice with The Sonoran Healing Center in Phoenix, Arizona, specializes in treating compulsive sexual behaviors. Dedicated professionals like Jeffrey can help ensure your successful recovery.
