Overcoming Porn Addiction

Overcoming porn addiction is now within reach. You can overcome your addiction with a game plan that works. Here we’ll discuss how to implement that plan.

First of all, a textbook definition of pornography could be: any sexually explicit material designed to arouse sexual feelings.

However, I think the best definition of pornography is: any material that arouses sexual feelings in the person viewing or hearing it – whether or not it was specifically designed for that purpose.

Said another way, if a picture, story, advertisement, video, song, game – anything – sexually arouses you, then it’s pornographic to you.

Watching porn a few times may not lead to an addiction, just as a few alcoholic drinks may not lead to an alcohol addiction. However, the risk is there.

What draws a person into
viewing pornography

The sexual urge in humankind is a powerful, necessary, and wonderful craving. Inborn to every normal child are the seeds of sexuality. They blossom in adolescence and soon mature. (In fact, they mature before the child does!)

This fundamental and powerful urge is, of course, the attraction between men and women.

Often through the normal routines of life, a man or woman, boy or girl, is exposed to pornography. Then, or even later in life, curiosity, or perhaps some unmet need, leads him or her to return to it.

Over time, with the powerful rush of sexual pleasure behind it, the repeated viewing of pornography becomes an addiction. It becomes extremely difficult to overcome.

Ending porn addiction

Getting out from under your porn addiction requires building new circuitry in the brain. That may seem impossible or too difficult. However, recent medical research is showing us how routinely it can be done. It requires effort, but it’s not overwhelmingly difficult.

The answer lies in replacing your current thoughts and actions with higher, more productive ones. It is in substituting your negative behaviors with activities that will refresh and sustain you.

I should put that in flashing neon lights!

Now, fortunately you are probably doing many good things with your life. You don’t need to worry about changing them. Often porn addicts think that their entire lives are a wreck. Probably many things are in chaos because the effects of pornography addiction ripple through your entire life.

However, you’re probably doing many things right. Keep doing those things. Pray for help to get better at those things. They are not your problem. So let’s just focus on the things you need to change.

Overcoming porn addiction is about eliminating all thoughts about the addiction. Quit even thinking about the fact that you want to overcome it. Instead, starting thinking about new things and work on getting good at new things.

If you’re a praying person, pray for help in doing or becoming a better person, like…

  • Help me as I work to be a better husband or father
  • Help me as I strive to be a better listener and to be more understanding
  • Please give me strength as I make every effort in my role as a provider.

I highly recommend that you do pray. If you feel you need help learning how to pray, please feel free to contact me here.

You must replace your negative behaviors with new, different, positive, uplifting thoughts and actions. They don’t undo your addiction. They take the place of it.

A Game Plan

The key to overcoming porn addiction is to implement a game plan that will put this replacement process into action.

Here’s a game plan that really works, a proven plan that can set you up to win. You or your loved one can be on the road to freedom from porn addiction today.
